How do we distinguish between the good and bad?
Having set morals and beliefs is one of many components that makes for a better you and a successful life.
Before I attempt to inspire you, allow me to convey what I think of success. The only person who can display the most perfect definition of success is you. Trust me, this is not a hoax. I can’t just pull out the definition out of my pocket because what my opinions are different to yours. You are your own person and what you value should be the base of what leads you to success. This is where morals and beliefs come in.
The prominent Greek philosopher, Aristotle, came down to a conclusion: “Only the good can be happy, and only the virtuous can be good.” This simply states that the way to happiness is to do good and you can only be good if you follow virtues that are good. But how do we know if something is good? What if we are unaware that some things are bad? All I can say is that good morals don’t harm others. Good morals impact the world for the better. And if that makes you happy, then you’re on the right track.
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is an intricate piece that greatly revolves around the life of Jay Gatsby. In my eyes, Gatsby is a rather peculiar character. I give him credit for his ambition to win Daisy’s heart, but I don’t agree with how he set his mind on a singular goal. While this shows how one can self-discipline his or herself, it also shows
While we think that morality cannot be explained by science, Sam Harris argues that it can -- and it should. He states that value is a certain kind of fact and that they are facts about the wellbeing of conscious creatures. However, this is still a new idea that I can’t completely wrap my head around.
